Based on a real-life story, this Southern character study is storytelling with one of the best ensemble casts of the year.

Robert Duvall could easily score an Oscar nomination for his role in this dryly witty gem.
This movie is old-school storytelling at its finest with Duvall starring as a recluse who emerges from seclusion as he plans his own funeral- to be held with him attending -very much alive to share his story of self-imposed exile while asking forgiveness.
This is one of Duvall’s best performances ever- truly one of a kind. There’s a reason why Bill Murray is picky about his roles. He has become a treasure of a character actor. I couldn’t picture anyone else as the smarmy funeral home director. Sissy Spacek’s role is smaller but achingly touching. This is ensemble acting at its peak. It’s a proudly anti-formulaic film . Memo to Hollywood: we need more of these!!
